Google search and deindexing

There have been some questions about Google Search and deindexing in search results, here you can read why.

The significant changes introduced in Google's March 2024 core and spam updates have led to many websites experiencing reduced visibility or deindexing in search results. These updates aim to enhance the quality of search results by targeting low-quality, unoriginal, and spammy content.

Key Factors Affecting Page Indexing

  1. Low-Quality or Unoriginal Content: Google's updated algorithms are more adept at identifying and demoting content that lacks originality or value. This includes content generated en masse, often through automated means, without providing unique insights or information.
  2. Scaled Content Abuse: The practice of producing large volumes of content solely to manipulate search rankings, regardless of whether it's AI-generated or human-written is now more likely to be penalized.
  3. Expired Domain and Site Reputation Abuse: Acquiring expired domains to publish low-quality content, or hosting third-party content that exploits a site's established reputation (known as "parasite SEO"), are practices now explicitly targeted by Google's spam policies.
  4. Indexing and Crawling Issues: Some site owners have reported that their pages remain indexed (i.e., they appear when using the site: search operator) but do not show up for relevant keyword searches. This suggests that while the pages are still in Google's index, they may have been algorithmically suppressed due to perceived low quality or relevance.

Steps to Diagnose and Address the Issue

  • Review Google Search Console: Navigate to the "Indexing" > "Pages" section to identify any errors or warnings related to crawling and indexing. This can highlight issues such as blocked resources or crawl anomalies.
  • Assess Content Quality: Evaluate your site's content to ensure it offers unique value, addresses user intent effectively, and avoids redundancy. Content should be comprehensive, well-structured, and free from excessive keyword stuffing.
  • Examine External Content: If your site hosts third-party content, ensure it aligns with your site's primary focus and maintains high quality. Hosting unrelated or low-quality third-party content can negatively impact your site's reputation in Google's eyes.
  • Monitor for Manual Actions: Check the "Manual Actions" section in Google Search Console to see if any penalties have been applied. While many impacts from the March 2024 update are algorithmic, manual penalties can also affect visibility.
By proactively addressing these areas, you can work towards restoring your site's visibility in Google Search.
